Sound in 13 Reasons why

When looking at sound, we focussed on a scene from 13 reasons why. When watching it we first listened to it with the sound turned on, and then listened to it with the sound turned off. We then had to identify all of the different sounds in the video. Obviously the music was a main feature of the video and then we also noticed the foot steps when Clay was walking down the corridor, as well as the school bell at they end of the video. The dialogue that Hannah was speaking had to be recreated by someone else.











We also learned about diegetic and non- diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is the sound that is actually in the scene, for example the footsteps when Clay was walking down the corridor, or when the actors are speaking in the scene. Non diegetic sound is when the sound is not picked up on screen and so has to be added during the edited process. For example, music being added to increase the tension or to make it a recognisable movie, such as the Jurassic park music, the music wasn't playing whilst the film was being shot, it got added in during the editing process.

When making the video, we used Elsa to say the lines that Hannah was speaking in that scene, we had to time how long Hannah took to speak in the original and then timed the breaks in-between each section. I watched the original video and then wrote down what she was saying to allow Elsa to say the exact same thing. We recorded it as a video and then layered the video over the original video and cut out the video and it just left us with the audio.

I personally think that this project went well, the most difficult part was to sync the music in the right place as well as finding the suitable music and to get it to start in the right place, but other than that this task was relatively easy. If we were to improve, i would maybe film the dialogue in a proper recording studio however due to time constrictions we weren't able to get in the studio.

    Well done Keri, you clearly worked hard to organise and create this. I agree with your comments re-the sound quality of the narration. Perhaps next time sound is involved try and book in some time in a recording studio asap.

rough cut

Before completing my finial film, i created a rough cut. This allowed me to experiment with ideas, trail out ideas and also try different techniques with editing and camera angles. In my rough cut i used the same settings as i wanted to in my finial piece, however used different actors. For my finial cut i want to use my Nan and Grandad as the two actors, however as they live in London i needed to experiment before they came down to film. This led me to using my friend and mum in my rough cut footage.   When filming the rough cut i used the poem i had found over the top of the footage to see how this could work in the real film. I felt this was extremely successful. I felt i really benefitted from completing a rough cut as it allowed e to review and refine my ideas.
